Ein Mann, der eines Morgens verhaftet wird, ohne zu wissen warum. In dieser bildstarken Adaption von Franz Kafkas Der Prozess finden sich die Zuschauer*innen in einer Bühnensituation und in der Rolle des Josef K. selbst wieder: Inmitten einer surrealen Theatermaschine werden sie gnadenlos in eine ausweglose Situation versetzt, mittendrin in ein bürokratisches und gnadenloses Justizsystem
Zwei Performer – Puppenspieler, Musiker und Erzähler zugleich – führen durch ein dynamisches Wechselspiel aus Handpuppen, Objekt- und Musiktheater, durchzogen von schwarzem Humor und rhythmischer Energie. Kraftvolle Puppenszenen kontrastieren mit musikalischen Ausbrüchen, die bisweilen in ein improvisiertes Konzert münden.
Um die kafkaeske Atmosphäre greifbar zu machen, nutzt die Inszenierung verschiedenste Theatertechniken, vom Figuren- und Objekttheater bis zur kabarettistischen Improvisation. Das Publikum wird nicht nur zu Zeugen, sondern zum Teil eines absurden Systems, das niemand versteht – und das dennoch unaufhaltsam wirkt.
The Trial or the Woeful Story of Joseph K. wurde 2012 erstmals aufgeführt und entwickelte sich schnell zu einem internationalen Erfolg. Zum 50-jährigen Jubiläum des Puppentheaters Maribor wurde das Stück nun wiederaufgenommen – zu unserem Glück!
A Kafkaesque Nightmare made of Puppets, Music, and Dark Humour
A man is arrested one morning without knowing why. In this visually striking adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Trial, the audience finds itself both within the theatrical setting and in the role of Josef K. himself: caught in the middle of a surreal theatre machine and cast into a nightmarish, inescapable situation at the heart of a merciless and bureaucratic justice system.
Two performers – puppeteers, musicians, and narrators all at once – guide the audience through a dynamic interplay of hand puppetry, object theatre, and live music, laced with dark humour and pulsating rhythm. Powerful puppet scenes stand in stark contrast to explosive musical episodes that occasionally erupt into improvised concert moments.
To make the Kafkaesque atmosphere tangible, the production employs a wide range of theatrical techniques – from puppetry and object manipulation to cabaret-style improvisation. The audience is not merely a witness but becomes part of an absurd system that no one truly understands – and yet seems unstoppable.
The Trial or the Woeful Story of Joseph K. premiered in 2012 and quickly gained international acclaim. Revived for the 50th anniversary of the Maribor Puppet Theatre – and fortunately for us – the production returns to the stage with undiminished force.
